Johnston Publishes New Poetry Collection

Johnston CovWRD instructor Allan Johnston’s new poetry collection, Departures, is being published by Finishing Line Press. Departures shares the richness of Johnston’s life growing up in Southern California.

Gary Snyder says, “Johnston’s intimate knowledge of Pacific Coast L.A. suburb lifeways comes alive in an old language…even as the ever-present ocean washes over it all.”

Whitney Scott, editor of the Black-and-White anthology series, says, “With its rippled tidal waters, dragonflies and cattails, Departures recalls a past that resonates powerfully, part of the present.”

Departures is available for pre-order from Finishing Line Press. Click here to purchase your copy today!

Allan Johnston’s poems have appeared in Poetry, Poetry East, Rattle, Rhino and many other journals.  His poetry collections include Tasks of Survival and Northport, also published by Finishing Line Press.  He has received an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and other awards.  Originally from California, he now teaches writing and literature at Columbia College and DePaul University in Chicago.

Johnston serves as a reader for Word River and for the Illinois Emerging Poets competition, and is also an editor for the Journal for the Philosophical Study of Education.  His scholarly articles have appeared in Twentieth Century Literature, College Literature, and several other journals.
